Big oil company propaganda which has a heart! Just the free movie we require for Thanksgiving! This 78-minute semi-documentary from 1948 is one from the most lyrical American films ever produced. In 1994, The Louisiana Story was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry with the Library of Congress being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It is the story of a Cajun boy and his family, living for the bayous you might say of life that we can barely imagine.
The boy's family rents land for the oil company, which comes in, drills, and leaves everything just like it was, clean and unspoiled except that the family includes a little more money. (Yes, it absolutely was funded from the Standard Oil Company.)
The boy spends nearly all of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating across the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, regarding his pet raccoon. He never wears a life preserver or shoes... doesn't even have a cell phone to call in case he gets having problems. There is not much story, merely a celebration (in such stunning white and black photography that you can well wonder what the big deal is approximately color) of your way of life that is no longer with us.
All in the actors were amateurs, and then for most, this was their only film. As of April 2007, J.C. First, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was ever made. Second, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was preserved. The director Carl Theodor Dreyer (more) died thinking that the last copy was destroyed. In a bit of weirdness that sounds a lot more like a movie compared to truth, an almost complete print was found in 1981 inside a janitor's closet of the Norwegian mental institution.
Finally, I am grateful we can watch this magnificent film, on many lists from the greatest films ever, totally free online at Gloria.tv, a Roman Catholic video site.
Maria Falconetti (more), who plays Joan, suffered a difficult breakdown during the making of the film, and she or he never made another film. Pauline Kael (more), a notoriously demanding film critic, asserted Falconetti's performance "may function as the finest performance ever documented on film."
