Streaming Video Mobile! Are you a film fan who loves to know every detail? Are you a TV aficionado who are able to name the locales of shows? Then the Spott app for Android is just for you. Learn more about the app that could give your entertainment knowledge the trail cred you will need.
I be honest. I have useless entertainment knowledge. I'm the individual my friends go to when they need to know the name of an show using a particular theme song or what the category of that character was who seemed like Shaggy from Scooby Doo but labored on a car (the solution, FYI, is Tinker and also the show was Speed Buggy, that was one with the many 'mysteries inc' cartoon imitators in the 60s and 70s).
While within an everyday setting, this useless knowledge is, well...useless, guess who's getting the call when someone provides the option to phone a pal from a game show set. Oh yeah. Me.
But sometimes my useless entertainment knowledge can fail me. Often, I might not know the answer to a matter in regards to the location of a show or film (gasp!). Lucky for me and you other entertainment lovers available, Android developers knew that one day, at some remote time with the day, we'd need to know this stuff.
So they made an app.
Spott is surely an Android app from Inochi Ventures that allows you to learn more about your selected films and TV that was made within your individual backyard. Using your phone's GPS system, Spott allows users either to browse by movie/show or their location to find out interesting details of that movie, show, or actors.
For example, Stapleton International Airport (now Denver IA) was the airport in the movie "Die Hard 2" with Bruce Willis. Up until recently, I had no idea that the hotel inside movie "Dumb and Dumber" happened to be the Stanley Hotel, which was also the inspiration and setting for Stephen King's popular book and movie, "The Shining".
Along with giving users a chance to see their town in a very whole new way, to keep your movies from the app, plus you'll be able to send in your own photo from your famous locale in your town.
The interface for Spott is simple to manuever around - it is possible to choose movies or shows by title, location, or movies which might be near you. Obviously the nearby feature is the better, particularly if you're traveling or recently moved. As noted, movie locations near my new capital of scotland- Denver along with the state of Colorado are pretty popular.
Another highlight is the ability to view stills from movies, though for some there aren't as many as you would find if you did a straightforward Google search, so when mentioned, you can buy DVDs of movies from your app. While a unique concept, I'm not really confident that I want to purchase movies on the move. It would oftimes be better in case you could watch said movie instead.
One downside to this app could be the fact that there aren't a lot of Spotts yet. For instance, as a former Tucson High Badger, my claim they can fame is the movie "Can't Buy Me Love" with pre-McDreamy Patrick Dempsey was filmed at our school, but I couldn't discover a listing when applying my former local zipcode. High point though is the fact that I learned elements of Casablanca were filmed in the nearby capital of scotland - Flagstaff, it's nice to see that a classic black and white film is listed.
There are also downsides, like actor listings, which can be meh at best, however, this is when the Spotters thing also comes in. Too bad this app didn't appear before I moved.
As a show and TV fan who goes wrong with love trivia, this is actually a pretty good app to have in case you've got an Android phone. Definitely the highlight with this app is always to view a wide selection of locations of different film scenes, though I think a lot of people will be thinking about where their hometown or current town factors in a variety of movies and shows.
A disappointment is some areas miss, that may be annoying for users who know a specific movie or show was filmed within their neck in the woods. But to counter this, users can supply images and upload the crooks to Spott. This is actually an incredible social interaction that gets fans involved since they proudly exhibit their cities and states.
I think a big let down will be the fact that this app isn't free; with just a small amount of information, this really should be a free app that gets upgraded to fund more expenses (like the opportunity to buy and download movies). Luckily, the price isn't too hefty -- only a dollar and some change, so that it might actually be worth the purchase only when to hope Inochi builds the app with fan interaction and loyalty.
You can discover the app here through the Android Market.
