2011 Top 10 Movies List! The one thing I love about surviving in Los Angeles will be the number of revival houses and single screen movie theaters you can still check out. I'm not talking about your multiplexes that are playing the newest Hollywood blockbusters, I'm discussing those historic cinemas that play in the classic movies we loved watching whenever we were becoming an adult. Many of these films we first watched on television or rented them on VHS from the local video stores (back when they existed), but we never got a chance to see them around the big screen where they belonged. But because of places like New Beverly Cinema, the Egyptian Theatre and Grauman's Chinese among other movie theatres, we finally get to discover their whereabouts the way they were meant to be seen.
Now I know many people who these days would prefer to curl up on the sofa and watch movies at home, however these cult movies need to be seen for the big screen in case you are ever in Los Angeles.
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show"
This musical comedy horror cult classic which stars Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick along with the great Tim Curry like a "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania" will be the longest-running midnight movie of them all. Thirty-eight years after "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" came out, it is still playing in limited release and midnight screenings keep going on all over America. However, you haven't lived until you have seen this movie on the Nuart Theatre in Santa Monica where audience members can dress up as their superheroes and talk returning to the screen in ways they couldn't if the were every other movie. Thanks to home video, "Big Trouble in Little China" gained a tremendous cult following, and audiences like it today in ways that you wished they did back when it first became available. It's such a kick to look at this film with the audience as they are in hysterics over Kurt Russell delivering his dialogue with the unapologetic John Wayne swagger, and that we have long since accepted the fact that his character of Jack Burton is much more of a blowhard than the usual hero. It doesn't matter how many times you have seen this movie; "Big Trouble in Little China" continues to be a blast to see through.
