Sites such as CinemaNow, Movielink, and Vongo have popped up offering users approximately 4,000 video/movie titles along with hundreds of TV show episodes. iTunes has also joined the marketplace, extending their interests from just music to TV, movies, and music videos.
Back to the question: will digital downloading kill DVD/Blu-ray discs?
"Yes" because:
- Society is becoming "instant gratification," along with faster Internet ability and flicks being able to be compressed on the size of 1gb, they are going to become better to download. And when someone's through with the movie with no longer would like to keep it on their own harddrive, they're able to just delete it.
- Downloading will eliminate the "need" for packaging. Like the example above, there won't be any need to handle scratched discs or misplaced ones, or creating shelf space to deal with your collection when you can maintain it on your personal computer.

- It would be nearly impossible (at least in the current standpoint) to offer the over 21,000 films that were made online. Each week several movies are available on disc, with just a fraction online. We would first have to offer everything current before tackling the insurmountable-looking back catalog.
- Believe it or not, some people want to be able to hold a relevant video in their hands, packaging and all. They don't love shelf space or depreciating value; it's the ability to look for this (as being a book) and pop it in the DVD player once they want, rather than having to traverse a computer that they don't like having.
- There is no clear platform for downloaded movies. Some from the services work with a browser, while some use the application created by the company.
- Digital rights management. The above mentioned download sites have their own "special" means of displaying the movie you downloaded. Eventually, movie downloading and watching will need to go cross-platform, which suggests the above companies will need to agree on one format to use as a way to show the films. That will also result in the movies "easier" to pirate and transport.
- With all the viruses running around, in addition to "inclement weather," how are you affected when your computer DIES? The motherboard fries, the harddrive locks up, etc. If your collection isn't burned onto disc, you have trouble...
In closing, my belief is the fact that digital downloading, while it's an interesting addition to movie watching, has a ways to go before it's going to get to the point it requires to be. That along with the fact that computers aren't 100% reliable, I do not believe video discs are leaving all of that soon.
